(Budapest) - On 29 October 2009, the Magyar Nemzeti Bank issued a silver collector coin ‘Calvin’ with a face value of HUF 5,000 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the birth of John Calvin.

THIS Saturday, October 17, all over the world, groups and committees will observe the UN International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (World Poverty Day). This year, the 20th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the focus will be the hardships faced by children and their families.

Fred Kaan has died aged 80

Geneva (ENI 10/06/2009). The Rev. Fred Kaan, a prolific 20th century English-language hymnologist, once described himself as the "world's most surprised hymn writer". Kaan, who has died aged 80, was unable to read music but wrote the words of more than 200 hymns in English, even though he started to learn the language only at the age of 16. He was born in the Netherlands in 1929 of Dutch parents, and moved in the 1950s to England, where he died on 4 October. Kaan was a retired minister of Britain's Untied Reformed Church. 1970-1978 Kaan was executive secretary of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches.

In a conversation with top representatives of the ecumenical organizations based in Geneva the CPCE put critical questions about the coexistence and cooperation of the confessional ecumene in Europe.

The CPCE Council welcomes the adoption of the EU Treaty by the citizens of Ireland. The European integration process must however be rooted more strongly in the population.

The Synod of Lithuanian Evangelic Reformed Church and the local parishes commemorate the year of John Calvin with a project "Calvin in untraditional places in Lithuania". There will be meetings in various locations in Lithuania, where people will read "The golden rules of Christian life" (the only book of Calvin that is translated into Lithuanian), talk and discuss about his life.

4, 5 Millionen von der EKD

Die Evangelische Kirche in Deutschland (EKD) will sich zukünftig an der Emder Johannes a Lasco Bibliothek beteiligen. Das hat die Kirchenkonferenz der EKD Anfang September entschieden. Im Gespräch ist eine Zustiftung von 4,5 Millionen Euro.

Der Generalsekretär der Reformierten Weltbundes, Setri Nyomi aus Ghana, hat die gemeinsame Globalisierungstagung der Evangelisch-reformierten Kirche und der Uniting Church of Southern Africa besucht. Vom 28. bis zum 29. September war der Ghanaische Pfarrer in der Emder Johannes a Lasco Bibliothek. 25 Theologen und andere Wissenschaftler vornehmlich aus Südafrika und Deutschland tagen seit dem 27. September dort zu Fragen der Globalisierung.
